Malta was not planned. We wanted a quick 2 day getaway from our current stop in Tunisia and Malta hit the mark. However, once we arrived and saw the oh so beautiful views and immediately thought “wow, more people should visit this place!”
I used to plan all of my trips, with detailed itineraries but then I learned to let go and go with the flow. Traveling has become one way that I am letting go by only booking places to stay and then waiting to ask at reception or local shops for recommendations. Usually, that is how you can find hidden gems which are not in guide books. Our first thought was, “can we move here?”
Malta was another beautiful city. My oh my, I could not believe how an island manages to have such historical buildings well preserved and very colorful! Knowing that we were only there for a short stay, I booked an AirBnB in the historical capital city of Valletta. While the island is very small, you don’t really notice that you are in a new city as they are very close together. We walked a lot and the hills are insanely steep! At one point we saw a Hop on Hop of red double decker tour bus and decided that with the heat and humidity, we needed to rest but still wanted to continue exploring the island. What a great idea!
”We saw half of the country in about 2 hours.”
Due to delayed flights we unfortunately experienced in and out of Malta, we did not have the chance to visit one of their beaches. While most of them are rocky beaches, it doesn’t really matter since the weather is hot and the view is beautiful from almost anywhere.
I will admit that the prices are in Euro so they are more expensive and the customer service is well below our North American standards (a little frustrating at times), but it is so darn beautiful and the food is incredibly delicious that you kinda overlook that detail.
Another thing that was funny, not so funny is the doors were quite narrow. I had to enter our apartment sideways, honestly we even took a picture of that because it was unsual as my shoulders did not fit through the front door.
It almost feels like you are in Italy without really being in Italy. The coffee, pizza, pasta, gelato and affogato or frappucino was OH MY LORD SO GOOD! I call it a food orgasm, lol!
I would definitely recommend visiting Malta. If I would go back then I would love to walk near the harbour towns such as Birgu and the Three cities, the beaches in the North as well as the Blue Grotto (scroll down to read more about it).
you better have your camera ready since you will constantly be taking photos.
So let’s visit Malta….
The views as we walked in old Valletta were oh so picturesque!
It was was a mini European getaway.
The windows and doors were bright and cheery, painted in beautiful colors! I love it!!!
The Blue Grotto Observation Tower. We would have loved to visit more in this little town but had to hop on the last bus of the day. There are also some boat rides to see the Blue Grotto, a natural site of Malta that is also quite mesmerizing which we did not get a chance to see. If you are travelling here, then this would be one of the many things to see from this little country.
We had 10 minutes to climb (before our bus arrived)…yes, climb the very narrow stairs for this view.
Visiting the countryside of Malta.
You can see the water from almost anywhere!
One of the harbour towns.
The fountain at the top of Old Valletta.
What is happening here? She was in awe looking at the fountain that it was so darn cute I had to take a video and pictures of her. Just being a normal mom recording every cute moments with my child.
Walking into Valletta…
Walking to the main street.
A shopping area. We found an amazing gelato and frappucino shop in this area!!
Cute little streets that had musician playing jazz and other romantic balads.
Yep, our dinner was that good! Pizza and gnocchi just like in Italy.
Dancing with my little girl while musicians playing in the background. She absolutely loved it!
